Hall of Famer Layla McCarter returns

Following a short break, 2Pounds Sports and Entertainment is bringing boxing to Portland once more, and this time eight-time world champion Layla “Amazing” McCarter (43-13-5) will defend her titles on the card, titled, “Fight Night 5: Put Up or Shut Up!”

Since 2Pound Sports launched in 2017, it has arranged four successful boxing cards in and around Portland, proving that local fight fans are eager for more combat sports. While staging women’s boxing has always been on the agenda, on April 4th at the Clackamas Armory, Layla McCarter will bring this plan to fruition by defending her WIBF and GBU welterweight championships.

When April 4th comes around, McCarter will have been undefeated for nearly 13 years and 20 fights. As women fighters go, she may actually be boxing’s best-kept secret.

“I think we’ll have a lot of support in Portland,” Layla says. “I’m a woman, I’m a good fighter and I think [Portland fans] will appreciate it.”

She’s still gunning for opportunities, however. And why won’t the big names fight her?

“Because they’re smart! They don’t want to lose.”

Rather than wait for the likes of Claressa Shields, Katie Taylor of Cecilia Braekhus to give her a call, McCarter has opted to bring the show to Portland. McCarter goes way back with Steve “2 Pound” Forbes, 2Pound Sports’ namesake.

“Steve Forbes has been a good friend for a long time,” McCarter said. “We were in the amateur program in the Northwest, we’re both from that area. When I was fighting as an amateur I was in Spokane, Washington and he was in Oregon. So we’ve been around each other since then. To bring it back to the Northwest with Steve Forbes is a big thing.”

While her opponent is pending, McCarter promises to bring the heat to the City of Roses.

“I’m just gonna give it my all until I can’t anymore,” she says.

The 1100-seat Clackamas Armory is located just 20 minutes south of Portland at 15300 SE Minuteman Way, Clackamas, Oregon.
