Jose Ramirez talks about his unification fight with Maurice Hooker

WBC super lightweight champion Jose Ramirez (24-0, 16 KOs) of Avenal, California, faces up to his biggest test to date when he faces WBO super lightweight champion Maurice Hooker (26-0-3, 17). KOs), from Dallas, Texas, on July 27 at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas, live on DAZN.

In an interview with the FIGHT NEWS news portal, Ramírez said:

“I have a fight against Maurice Hooker, which is a difficult unification battle in Texas and I am very motivated for it.”

Ramirez, who is preparing in Riverside, California with Robert Garcia, continued: “My preparation has been the best I´ve ever had. We know the magnitude of this fight and the opportunity to show who is the best. That alone gives me the additional energy and motivation to push myself each and  every day in the gym.”

For Ramirez this will be the third defense of his WBC title that won over Amir Imam last year and  who comes from a tough unanimous decision over Jose Zepeda.

Ramírez not only fights for himself but every time he steps in the ring, he fights for a cause. By living in California’s Central Agricultural Valley, Ramírez regularly fights to draw attention to the droughts that have affected the entire region for years. Ramírez has been a great defender of this cause, christening the cards “Fight for Water” since he became a professional. Since becoming champion, Ramirez continues to fight for noble causes. In his last fight he raised funds for a cancer organization.

“I dedicated that fight to all the people affected by cancer, we were able to donate that money,” Ramírez said. “I do everything I can to fight for noble causes, water and immigration,” Ramírez added.

As the son of Mexican immigrants from Michoacán, Ramírez also spoke on immigration issues, as he is proud of his Mexican roots.

“I fight for those who work hard to be in this country. Lately there have been many problems with immigration. I myself am the son of immigrant workers who came from Mexico,” Ramírez said. “Many people who have come to this country have been here, their families have been established and settled here. This is their home and their way of life.”

With less than a month to unify, Ramírez is almost in the final stage of his training camp before heading to Texas. Ramirez has no problem going to Hooker’s backyard.

Dino Duva, Maurice Hooker's promoter, is visiting Mexico City.  He told the WBC: “This is going to be a great match. It has the potential in my opinion with their styles to be Fight Of The Year! They are both great warriors, there`s going to be a fantastic crowd in Dallas, with Maurice`s home town fans plus the Mexican fans rooting for Jose. Everyone is really looking forward to it. for me this is the contest for the number one super lightweight of the World right now.

“It`s just great to be back in Mexico City. I love the people, the atmosphere and of course the greatest fight fans in the World!”

The unification fight between Jose Carlos Ramirez and Maurice Hoooker will take place at the College Park Center in Arlington in Arlington, Texas.
